Brief notes from visit to Pier40 Boathouse

-Lang on the Hudson is a course where students build the boats. Once boats are built they are donated to the nonprofit
-The Pier40 Boathouse is a 501C3 nonprofit
-The mission is to expand public access to waterways by building boats and taking the public out in the boats. It makes the water feel public, which it is.
-All waterways in NYC must remain in public domain, though people contend with this often
-3,000 people a year go out, 20 a day. Season starts in april.
-South side of pier is warmer than the north because of the southern sun. Solar orientation is HUGE when building one of these facilities. Wind direction, tide, and sun are all important. The Basin is great for teaching people how to row. 6-11 ft. shallow waters are good for teaching.
-Whitehall boats are traditional New York boats
-A class could easily build a boat in 15 sessions
-Viele map explains contours
-Download nautical charts @ NOAA or buy them at duane st.
